The Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation is set to host a two-day Capacity Building Workshop focused on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), as part of ongoing efforts to implement the State Water Law approved in December 2022.
This strategic initiative followed the recent approval of the WASH Policy Framework and Open Defecation Free (ODF) Road Map by the State Executive Council, reinforcing it’s commitment to sustainable public health and environmental goals.
In a statement in Uyo yesterday Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, Dr. Ubuo Ubuo, said the workshop with the theme “WASH Sector: Strengthening the LGAs Towards Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” is aimed at empowering local government leaders to establish and operationalize functional WASH Departments in their Local Councils.
It is expected to bring together Council Chairme and their Heads of Service and designated WASH Focal Persons.
The statement emphasized that the initiative is a vital part of the state’s broader agenda to improve water supply, sanitation, and hygiene services at the grassroots level, contributing significantly to the realization of the SDGs, particularly Goal 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation.
“The state government remains fully committed to equipping all LGAs with strong institutional frameworks to deliver essential WASH services that promote public health and sustainable development.” It stated.
