Nigerian government official reassures ongoing support for the pastor incarcerated in Benin Republic.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has assured a Nigerian pastor, Benjamin Egbaji, of the Federal Government’s continued support despite his ongoing incarceration in the Republic of Benin.
The minister’s assurance came during a visit to Egbaji on Saturday, in Cotonou, where he has been detained for over two years, a statement on Thursday by Dr. Magnus Eze, Special Assistant on Communication and New Media to the minister, confirmed.
Egbaji, who was arrested in May 2023, was convicted in July 2024 of raping a 13-year-old girl, Bright Sarah Karls, and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. He was also fined a total of $6,600 payable to the victim and the Benin National Institute for Women Affairs. His health has deteriorated significantly since his detention, leading to prolonged hospitalization.
During her visit, Odumegwu-Ojukwu told the ailing pastor: “I want to assure you that Nigeria hasn’t not forgotten you; Nigerians are aware of your case, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is aware. We are committed to the wellbeing of every Nigeria—that’s what citizen diplomacy is all about. That’s why we have said we must visit you.
“It’s not a hopeless situation; we must do everything to ensure that you get justice. We are following due process to ensure that you don’t suffer unduly. So, as a government, we are duty-bound to protect every Nigeria citizen. Your suffering will soon be over; just be a little more patient for the processes to be concluded”.
Overcome with emotion, Egbaji broke down in tears during the visit, citing his worsening health condition. His case is currently under appeal.
Meanwhile, Alhaji Mohammad Munir, President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, NIDO, Republic of Benin chapter, lauded the minister’s visit as timely and compassionate.
