In a move aimed at fostering stronger collaboration and improving transparency, the 17 brigade of the Nigerian Army, Katsina state has hosted a luncheon for journalists and media personnel from Katsina State.
The event, held at the Officers Mess of the command, saw the participation of members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) led by comrade Tukur Hassan Dan Ali alongside other media professionals.
Brigadier General B.O. Omopariola, Commander of the 17 Brigade, spearheaded the occasion, underscored the critical role of the media in shaping public opinion, influencing military operations, and rallying public support in an increasingly interconnected world.
“The media luncheon is more than a social gathering,” Omopariola said. “It is a deliberate effort to create a relaxed environment where members of the media and the military can interact, network, and build a more collaborative relationship.”
He further emphasized the importance of embedding journalists in military operations to ensure accurate and balanced reporting. “By integrating journalists into the planning and execution of military operations, we can mitigate negative narratives and foster a better understanding of the challenges and achievements of our security agencies,” he explained.
The event also served as a platform to reinforce the army’s commitment to improving access to information and ensuring the accuracy of reports concerning military activities.
Brigadier General Omopariola highlighted the luncheon as an opportunity to “engrave the military’s friendship with the media and bridge the existing divide.”
