This year’s event of the Nigerian Armed Forces Remembrance Day was one of solemnity and gratitude as the nation marked the symbolic event at the Eagles Square Abuja, with the traditional laying of wreaths and outpour of tributes for fallen personnel.
The event, held annually to honor the sacrifices of the nation’s fallen heroes, drew prominent leaders and citizens to pay tribute to those who gave their lives for the defense and unity of the country.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, standing in for his boss, President Bola Tinubu, who was attending the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, led the nation in remembrance.
Shettima, accompanied by members of the federal cabinet, participated in the ceremonial laying of wreaths, a gun salute, and other military rituals. The ceremony was attended by top officials, including the Senate leadership, House of Representatives, service chiefs, and the Inspector General of Police, alongside widows and families of fallen soldiers.
In a statement, the Senate commended the bravery and sacrifices of both past and present military personnel, emphasizing their role in safeguarding the nation’s security and peace. The leadership further recognized those currently in service for their ongoing commitment to national defense.
Earlier, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff, also extended heartfelt tributes to the fallen soldiers and their families. He highlighted the day as an occasion to remember not only those who paid the ultimate price but also the living heroes who continue to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Charging serving personnel to emulate the virtues of their predecessors, General Oluyede praised the valor and selflessness of the armed forces, noting that while the bravery of many may not be chronicled in history books, their deeds will forever be etched in the hearts of Nigerians.
The Army Chief also called on active service personnel to remain resolute in their mission, emphasizing that their sacrifices ensure a secure future for the generations to come. He reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare of troops and their families, reinforcing that their well-being is a top priority under his leadership.
As the nation paused to remember, the day served as a poignant reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of Nigeria’s military in ensuring the peace and unity of the country.
