Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has retracted his earlier comments that were widely interpreted as a veiled threat toward Labour Party chieftain and former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi.
In a clarifying statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo insisted his message had been “grossly misinterpreted,” and reiterated that Edo State remains “welcoming to all Nigerians regardless of political affiliation.”
“At no point did I threaten Mr. Peter Obi. I only stressed the need for security clearance, which is standard procedure for all politically exposed persons,” the Governor said.
He added that the call for protocol was not aimed at stifling political engagement but rooted in genuine concern for public safety:
“We are dealing with a delicate security environment where Catholic priests and religious leaders have been targets. When visits attract large crowds and media attention, we must be prepared to protect everyone involved.”
Governor Okpebholo also clarified his remarks about public donations, urging all leaders to apply discretion:
“Even Jesus taught us in Matthew 6:2–4 to give quietly. Public giving, while noble, can inadvertently expose religious institutions and their leaders to risk,” he explained.
