The Federal government has said Nigeria is keen on strengthening its partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), particularly in advancing social protection measures, enhancing occupational safety and health standards, and promoting gender equality in the workplace.
Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi stated this when he played host to the Director-General of the ILO, Mr. Gilbert F Houngbo who paid a courtesy visit on his office as part of activities lined up for his visit to Nigeria.
Dingyadi expressed confidence that discussions during the ILO DG’s visit to Nigeria will further consolidate mutual efforts in tackling pressing labour market challenges, particularly in the areas of youth unemployment, skills development, and informal sector integration.
The minister said, “We also seek to deepen our collaboration in the implementation of lLO conventions, many of which Nigeria has ratified and remains committed to upholding,” adding that, “Our government remains resolute in its commitment to creating a business-friendly environment that supports sustainable enterprises, encourages decent work, and drives economic growth.”
The Minister said the ILO Director-General visit to Nigeria is a testament to the strong and enduring relationship between the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Nigeria and also an affirmation of “our shared commitment to advancing the principles of decent work, social justice, and economic prosperity for all.”
Dingyadi expressed appreciation for the continuous support and partnership of the ILO in promoting labour rights, employment creation, and workplace equity in Nigeria, noting that the ILO has played a pivotal role in shaping policies that protect workers’ rights, promote safe and productive workplaces, and foster industrial harmony.
He said, “Mr. Director-General, as you interact with key stakeholders in the Nigerian labour landscape, we trust that your visit will further cement the cooperation between the ILO and Nigeria, leading to impactful outcomes for our workforce and economy. We are honored to host you, and we look forward to continued partnership in building a just and equitable world of work.”
In his response, the ILO Director-General expressed optimism that his visit will further strengthen the organisation’s cooperation with Nigeria in addressing several labour issues, including child labour, decent work, Social Justice, tackling youth unemployment & informality, while promoting skills, social protection, gender equality, and ILO conventions
Mr Houngbo acknowledged that many countries are dealing with the impact of not just COVID and the different crises in the world, which has led to increase in cost of living and inflation, adding that his visit will afford him to opportunity to dialogue with key stakeholders and understand how Nigeria is dealing with those issues and how the ILO can assist
