Hon. Aliyu Zakari Idris, the nominee representing Katsina Central Senatorial District in the Nigerian Youth Parliament (NYP), has officially declared his ambition to contest for the position of Speaker in the 6th Session of the Parliament.
In his declaration, Hon. Idris outlined a robust agenda aimed at strengthening the Parliament’s operations and enhancing youth participation in governance. He emphasized the need to ensure that the Nigerian Youth Parliament holds its sittings uninterruptedly, pledging to work closely with sub-national governments to guarantee that sessions take place regularly and effectively. According to him, a functional and active Parliament will provide a continuous platform for young people to contribute meaningfully to national discourse and policy development.
Hon. Idris also stressed the importance of equipping NYP members with practical legislative knowledge. To achieve this, he promised to push for a structured internship training program in collaboration with the National Assembly. The initiative will ensure the placement of NYP members with relevant Standing Committees in the National Assembly, allowing them to gain hands-on experience in legislative processes and governance. He believes that such exposure will significantly enhance their understanding of parliamentary procedures and policymaking.
Recognizing the need for broader capacity-building, he announced plans to initiate partnerships with organizations already engaged in legislative training and mentorship programs. These collaborations, he explained, will provide NYP members with additional opportunities to refine their legislative skills and learn from experienced professionals in the field. By working with established institutions, he aims to position the Nigerian Youth Parliament as a credible training ground for future leaders.
Furthermore, Hon. Idris reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the advisory role of the Nigerian Youth Parliament. He highlighted the Parliament’s jurisdiction as both an advisory platform and a leadership training institute, promising to ensure that its potential is fully utilized. Under his leadership, the NYP will actively engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure that its recommendations and policy contributions receive the attention they deserve.
Speaking on his vision, Hon. Idris stated: “The Nigerian Youth Parliament is a vital institution for young leaders to develop legislative competence and contribute to national progress. If elected Speaker, I will work tirelessly to ensure that our Parliament is functional, impactful, and positioned as a training ground for future leaders.”
His declaration has already sparked widespread support from youth organizations, student leaders, and political stakeholders who recognize his leadership experience and dedication to youth empowerment. As the race for the Speakership unfolds, all eyes are on the Nigerian Youth Parliament’s 6th Session to see how its leadership will be shaped in the coming weeks.
