The House of Representatives Tuesday mandated the Clerk to the National Assembly Mr. Kamoru Ogunlana to revert all authenticated Bills passed by both Houses to the Clerks of the Senate and the House for confirmation pending final transmission to the President for assent.
Rep Sada Soli, a ranking member of the House who tabled the motion to this effect said the authentication process would ensure Legislative Integrity and Accuracy
The lawmaker noted that discrepancies in some Bills passed by the National Assembly, specifically allegations that certain provisions are not identical with the original Bill passed by both the Senate and the Houses of Representatives.
He noted that President Tinubu’s recent decline to assent to a Bill due to errors underscored the need for meticulous verification.
He said “All laws passed by the National Assembly are usually are usually forwarded to the Clerk to the National Assembly for authentication, in accordance with the provisions of the Authentication Act.”
“Bills not always reverted to the Clerks of both Houses for confirmation to ensure that the final versions of such Bills accurately reflect the intentions of the NASS before transmission to the President for assent”, he added.
In adopting the motion, members called for the confirmation process to be made mandatory for Bills, including Constitution Alteration Bills, to guarantee the integrity and legitimacy of the legislative process.
