Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative with the World Meteorological Organisation, WMO, Prof. Charles Anosike, has paid a working visit to the Directorate of General Meteorology in Morocco.
Nigerian Pilot reports that the visit took place on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations Systematic Observation Financing Facility, SOFF, workshop for Peer Advisors and Implementing Entities in Casablanca. Prof. Anosike held bilateral talks with his Moroccan counterpart, Mohammed Dhkissi, and was also taken on a guided tour of the meteorological facilities.
Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between Nigeria and Morocco in artificial intelligence, AI-based weather forecasting and early warning systems. Both leaders agreed to develop a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU to formalise cooperation in key areas, including the implementation of the WMO Integrated Global Observing System Centre and an instrument calibration centre in Abuja.
Other areas of collaboration include data management, ICT solutions, training of instructors in both English and French, agricultural meteorology, and the integration of AI in numerical weather prediction.
Prof. Anosike and Dhkissi also acknowledged the existing cordial relationship between both countries, which has involved data exchange, participation in NiMet’s Stakeholders’ Engagement Forum, and Nigeria’s involvement in Morocco’s ClimAfrica initiative.
Both parties pledged to deepen cooperation and ensure sustained collaboration for enhanced climate resilience and institutional sustainability.
