The Anambra State Police Command has says a police inspector, Amechi Okolie, has allegedly been killed by his 10-year-old son and injured another son with an AK-47 rifle while on duty in Awka.
According to the press statement that was signed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, yesterday in Awka, said that Okolie was fatally shot by his son accidentally while the inspector was on duty at a bank in Awka, the state capital.
“The incident was allegedly due to an accidental discharge by his 10-year-old son. The son, unaware of the state of the AK 47 rifle assigned to the Inspector, pulled the trigger and struck the Inspector on the back and his second child on the hand.
“Regrettably, Inspector Amechi was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty at the hospital, while the second victim was said to be responding to treatment. Meanwhile, the AK47 rifle has been recovered while the remains of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue.
“The Command, while wishing the second victim a quick recovery, condoles with the family and friends of the late Inspector”, he said.
The police spokesman said that the weapon had been retrieved and secured while the case had been brought before the Central Police Station (CPS) in Awka for investigation.
