The Rotary Club of Abuja Ministers Hill on Wednesday evening commissioned a community WASH project, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to promoting hygiene, public health, and sustainable community development within the Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking, President of the Rotary Club of Abuja Ministers Hill, Rotarian Adams Oyarekhua, on Wednesday said the club was at the Primary Health Care Centre to commission its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project, funded through a District 9127 grant from the Rotary Foundation.
He explained that the project, executed in the current Rotary year, was officially commissioned in the presence of the Immediate Past District Governor, reflecting the district’s confidence in the club’s capacity to deliver impactful interventions.
Describing the health facility as the club’s adopted community, Oyarekhua said Rotary’s support would be sustained over time, noting that the intervention focused on improving access to clean water and hygiene.
He listed components of the project to include water reticulation from an overhead tank to toilets and handwashing basins, installation of an outdoor handwashing sink, a tap stand providing free clean water to the community, and a solar-powered borehole that guarantees uninterrupted water supply and 24-hour electricity at the facility.
He urged the management of the centre to properly maintain the installations to ensure long-term benefits.
Oyarekhua noted that Rotary projects are built on continuity, partnerships, and the principle of ‘Service Above Self,’ stressing that the club’s interventions go beyond water and sanitation.
According to him, Rotary has also supported schools, provided scholarships, and contributed to healthcare delivery in the community, adding that even small acts of giving can make a meaningful difference in addressing poverty, hunger, and public health challenges.
The Immediate Past District Governor of Rotary International District 9127, Mike Ukachi Nwanoshiri, on Wednesday said the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project executed by the Rotary Club of Abuja Ministers Hill was fully implemented in line with the approved district grant.
He noted that despite the project being one of the most challenging undertaken by the district, all funds were transparently utilised and properly reported, adding that the intervention focused on improving water reticulation, sanitation facilities, and steady water supply through a borehole connected to an overhead tank.
Nwanoshiri said the project also included the donation of essential medical and hygiene items such as bedding, maternity gowns, staff uniforms, disinfectants, hand sanitisers, and waste bins, describing the intervention as a reflection of continuity and trust in the club’s leadership. While commending the seamless execution and alignment with Rotary’s disease prevention and treatment focus.
He urged the health facility’s management to prioritise maintenance, stressing that proper upkeep would encourage further Rotary interventions and ensure sustained community health benefits.
Mrs. Akpan Idongesit George, Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Jahi Primary Health Care Centre, expressed deep appreciation to Rotary for its intervention, describing the transformation of the facility as remarkable.
According to her, the improved environment has made the facility more welcoming to patients.
Immediate Past President of the Rotary Club of Abuja Ministers Hill, Oroghene Adia, described the commissioning of the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project as a proud moment for both himself and the club, commending the current leadership for successfully delivering the intervention.
He recalled that the project was conceived and approved during his tenure in the 2024–2025 Rotary year, noting that the successful grant application laid the foundation for its execution.
Adia expressed satisfaction that the project was effectively implemented by the incumbent president and the project committee, stressing that Rotary operates on continuity, where each administration builds on the achievements of its predecessor.
According to him, the seamless transition and completion of the project reflect the club’s commitment to sustainable community service and collective responsibility.
