A suicide bomber was reportedly killed in a failed attempt to infiltrate the Mogadishu Cantonment in Abuja on Monday triggering an explosion that injured two other individuals.
The incident reportedly occurred around 2:50 PM along the Mararaba-Nyanya bypass, near a military checkpoint under the pedestrian bridge close to the entrance of the cantonment.
A statement released on Monday by the FCT Police Command, Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh confirmed that: “On May 26th, 2025 at approximately 2:50 PM, the FCT Police Command received a distress report regarding an explosion along Mararaba-Nyanya bypass.”
Following the report, she said specialized police units were immediately dispatched to the scene.
“Upon receipt of the report, officers of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit were immediately deployed to the scene. The affected area was swiftly cordoned off for analysis to ensure the safety of commuters and residents.”
The police confirmed that a male victim was rescued and hospitalized.
“One male victim was rescued at the scene and promptly taken to the hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention”, he said.
She added that a comprehensive investigation has commenced into the incident, “including detailed forensic analysis, to ascertain the exact cause and nature of the explosion.
In a separate statement, military sources revealed that the bomber had been dropped off from a vehicle and attempted to approach the cantonment on foot.
The source added that he detonated the explosive device after being questioned by a Military Police Officer, killing himself and injuring two civilians, who are currently being treated at the Defence Medical Hospital.
