The Supreme Court of Nigeria and the National Judicial Council (NJC) have expressed profound sorrow over the death of former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, who passed away in the early hours of Tuesday.
In a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations of the Supreme Court, Dr. Festus Akande, the late jurist was described as a distinguished leader whose tenure left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s judiciary.
Justice Tanko Muhammad, the 17th Chief Justice of Nigeria, served from 2019 to 2022. According to the statement, his leadership was defined by a strong commitment to the rule of law, judicial independence, and fairness in the administration of justice.
The Supreme Court noted that the late CJN was widely respected for his intellect, humility, and compassionate disposition – qualities that endeared him to judges, lawyers, and the wider public. It highlighted his contributions to strengthening the appellate system, improving procedural efficiency, promoting continuous training for judicial officers, and fostering transparency and accountability within the judiciary.
The court extended its condolences to his family, the Nigerian judiciary, and the general public, praying that his legacy of integrity and dedication would continue to inspire those serving in the justice sector.
Similarly, the National Judicial Council, in a statement signed by its Secretary, Ahmed Saleh, said the Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the NJC, Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, commiserated with the family of the late Justice Tanko Muhammad. The NJC described his passing as a great loss to the nation and the legal profession, noting his years of meritorious service to the judiciary.
