Tragedy struck Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), as a 25-year-old student, Ayodele Peter, was allegedly killed by suspected cultists in Owo, Ondo State.
The incident occurred in the Opomulero area of the town, throwing residents and the polytechnic community into shock and mourning.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attack took place at Shine Villa, Opomulero Street, where the assailants gained access to the victim’s residence under the guise of being visitors. Peter was reportedly called out of his apartment before being violently assaulted and shot at close range.
A community source said a distress call was immediately placed to security agencies after gunshots were heard in the area. The victim was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel.
“He was rushed out after the shooting and taken to the hospital, but unfortunately, he could not survive the injuries,” the source said.
Residents described the incident as part of a suspected cult-related raid, allegedly targeted at rival group members within the community.
Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Command said it received a distress call on December 14, 2025, regarding a violent attack involving suspected cultists at Shine Villa, Opomulero Street, Owo.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Kazeem, revealed that operatives were immediately deployed to the scene, supported by intelligence-led policing and a swift tactical response. He confirmed that the victim was rushed to FMC, Owo, where he was later pronounced dead.
Kazeem disclosed that a coordinated manhunt for the perpetrators led to the arrest of one suspect in connection with the murder, adding that the suspect is currently in custody and has made useful statements.
“The Ondo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that it received a distress call on 14th December, 2025, regarding a violent incident involving suspected cultists at Shine Villa, Opomulero Street, Owo. Upon receipt of the information, it was alleged that suspected members of a cult group forcefully gained entry into the premises and attacked one Ayodele Peter, male, aged 25,” Kazeem stated.
