Nigerian Air Force, NAF, has said it will investigate reports of civilian casualties following an airstrike on bandits in Zakka Village, Katsina State, on February 15.
The NAF said the airstrike, conducted by the Air Component of Operation Fansan Yanma, was aimed at neutralizing bandits who had attacked a Police Mobile Force location in the area, killing two police officers and four vigilantes.
Nigerian Pilot reports that while the airstrike successfully neutralized several bandits and thwarted the assault on security personnel, allegations have emerged suggesting that the operation may have resulted in civilian casualties, raising concerns among local communities and human rights organizations.
In response to these allegations on Monday, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, ordered a thorough and transparent investigation. “The NAF takes these concerns seriously and is committed to uncovering the truth,” said Air Marshal Abubakar. “We will ensure that every aspect of this operation is reviewed carefully and that appropriate action is taken based on the findings,” he added.
A statement issued by Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, reassured the public, stating, “We recognize the importance of accountability in all our operations. Our rules of engagement are designed to protect both security personnel and civilians. Any deviation from these standards will be addressed accordingly”.
The NAF also emphasized that the investigation will be carried out in line with international protocols to maintain transparency.
“The safety and well-being of innocent civilians is paramount. We will act decisively and transparently to ensure that all parties are held accountable if any wrongdoing is discovered,” the statement added.
